I am privileged to work in a large, vibrant mainstream junior school where we have an enhanced resource provision. In my role as a Strategic Attachment Lead I have steered the school’s vision to develop an attachment aware framework to meet the needs of the many children in the school who have experienced some form of relational trauma and loss. My inclusive, creative and relational approach to education is essential in ensuring all children fulfil their potential.
After graduating with a BSc (Hons) in Psychology and later qualifying as a primary teacher, I gained extensive experience from a range of mainstream and special educational settings, including a residential centre, teaching and supporting children and young people aged from 4-19.
Currently, I lead attachment aware practice in our school by reforming school policy; completing relevant child assessments and observations; providing ongoing staff training; and developing practical strategies to ensure these children can settle and access learning. I have a strong belief in supporting families and my work is underpinned with emotional support and practical advice for their parents and guardians.
I advocate out of school by lobbying at the House of Commons for child development, attachment and neuroscience to be included in initial teacher training programmes through the Consortium for Emotional Well Being in Schools. More locally, in Derby, I consult with other educational and health professionals to plan how to improve provision for complex and vulnerable children across the city.
To compliment my role as a Strategic Attachment Lead I have completed training in Theraplay® (Level 1) and we are beginning to see the positive impact of building Theraplay Informed Practice into the school’s attachment aware framework. I am also a qualified trainer in a holistic approach to understanding behaviour and intervention and I have delivered training over 15 years to both special and mainstream schools.
My experience and training enable me to drive a passion for understanding pupil’s behaviour and to use these insights to have a positive impact on the lives of vulnerable children.
