Therapeutic Parenting

These are weekly DDP sessions – (Dyadic Developmental Parenting) provided to parents or carers of those children who have experienced developmental trauma, by a specialist therapist trained in this area of work. Usually these children have been adopted, fostered, or live with their special guardians. Sometimes birth children have also experienced developmental trauma and their parents can also benefit from this specialist support.

Therapeutic Parenting Support sessions are not personal therapy. However, the therapist will take a detailed history of your child’s history and your experiences with them so far. They will also want to find out about your own attachment history and how you experienced growing up because these experiences impact parenting (both positively and negatively). When you reflect on your experiences with a person trained in understanding the impact of parenting traumatised children this helps to settle the nervous system, regulating the parent(s) so that the parent(s) can be more present for their children both in times of distress and in joy.

The sessions will help you to put Therapeutic Parenting into practice at home with your children and to communicate their needs to their school and the wider system.
